I have struggled for years trying to separate the service of our troops from the betrayal of the American Republic by our leaders who sent them to war. In my mind I couldn’t separate the actions of our troops from the orders of their commanders in context of the oath of office; coming to understand that not everyone has the same frame of reference I do or the same background and experiences. I hope our people learn to understand the Constitution; what government can and cannot lawfully do so they can better preserve their liberty by holding their government officers accountable.
As I walked through the local cemetery, paying my respects to those veterans who answered the call of their nation and performed their duty faithfully as they understood it, I received clarity as I read name after name of men who served through wars from the 19th century to the present. Not everyone has read the Bible, nor spent thousands of hours researching the history of corruption in the offices of our government. Many of those men heard of the destruction of the Maine, the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine, listened in horror of the Japanese bombing of our forces in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, or watched on television as America was attacked on 9/11/2001. When America was attacked our men and women responded in overwhelming numbers. Farmers, mechanics, fishermen, grocers, cooks, bakers, and every other sort of American put their lives on hold and risked everything to take the fight to those who threatened our homes and way of life.
During WWII our women stepped up and replaced the men who answered the call; making sure our troops had tanks, jeeps, artillery, and every other implement of war that was necessary to defeat our declared enemies abroad. Many thousands served as angels of mercy in hospital units around the world, sometimes being the last face our troops saw on this earth; many a soldier has benefited from a nurses tender care and comfort. Americans answer the call and step up whenever they’re needed to aid others or oppose tyrants and I believe they will step up to overthrow the tyranny destroying America from within once they understand what must be done.
The hell of combat and the insanity of war is something I hope no one ever has to experience in their lives but there are times when fighting is unavoidable and holding the line can make the difference of life and death for our comrades and our nation. Those who have not experienced the horror of war cannot grasp or understand what our men and women have endured, the things they were called upon to do, and the effects those experiences have upon the rest of their lives. Sacrifice isn’t even an adequate word to describe the cost… just look at the number of them that take their own lives because they cannot live with it.
I long for the day when America returns back to its roots of liberty and adherence to the Constitution; where our people will only need to martial when our republic is attacked and Congress once again declares war, defines the enemy, explains why we’re fighting, and prosecutes the war until the enemy is no longer a threat to our shores. Where our citizens are armed and our communities cannot be easily attacked by threats from within or without. I believe that if we return our government to its proper role, hold our leaders to their oath of office by swiftly punishing those that violate it, and follow only those laws in pursuance of the Constitution that secure our rights, that there will be fewer graves of those who must fight and die in war.
America was not founded to be the empire it is today but a land of liberty, opportunity, and prosperity for our people; it has become the opposite and that must stop if America is to continue to exist. I pray that this Memorial Day we will remember the sacrifice of our military men and women as well as dedicate ourselves to returning government to the limitations of the Constitution. Our people will once again be free to pursue their happiness and we will once again become a beacon of liberty and justice to the world; not an oppressive and meddling force for the money powers and their corporations.
